Green is the new color for summer as designer Lizzie Parker unveils her eco-friendly, sustainable clothing line in Seattle, Wa. We caught up with Lizzie after the grand opening of her new store to chat about the recent increase in green technology, the hardships of opening your own business, and her future television and business endeavors.
How do you incorporate your eco-friendly, organic attitude into your personal life, as well as your professional life?
I’ve done all I can, that technology allows, to be 100% sustainable in my clothing line. I find some people to be a little “eco-crazy”. My belief is that if everyone does a little bit, or what they can, we can reach our goal of sustainability. I don‘t drive a hybrid because I have a family to travel with, but it’s the small contributions that can make the biggest impact. If we can start recycling more or using florescent light bulbs, we can make a difference. I believe everyone just needs to do what they can, when they can.
What are your best selling item(s)?
The favorite tee shirt has been the best selling item since I started designing it. People have told me they need more of them because they feel guilty about wearing it to bed and keeping it on for the next day! It’s just one of those shirts you can do everything in!
You manufacture everything out of Seattle to support local industry. What about the city of Seattle makes it unique and appealing to designers like you?
I’m not going to lie, it’s hard to be a designer in a city that is not central to fashion, such as Los Angeles or New York City. However, this has enabled me to discover many great resources and increased my focus on finding first-rate suppliers. Even if I could move to New York, I don’t think I would. Seattle is a great place to own a business and raise a family, even with the rain!
What business advice do you have for any women thinking about or trying to open their own businesses?
It’s going to cost you three times as much as you think! I found myself paying a lot more than I expected. Another thing you must keep in mind is to be true to yourself. If you have a good idea, stick to it. Don’t let outside influences change your mind about your own visions. The ability to adapt and embrace change is a great characteristic to have as a designer. My business model has evolved rapidly over my career in fashion, and I have had to adapt along with it.
What’s the inside scoop on great summer trends and fashions?
It’s all about bright colors this season! Maxi dresses, both short and long are great for the hot weather. Open-toed chunky heels and lightweight scarves are both must haves for the summer season. This summer it’s all about the 70’s/Boho style that’s comfortable and looks great!
We would be surprised to know…
I’m a huge closet heavy metal fan! I’ve probably seen every hair band of the 80’s in concert, and my all time favorite is AC/DC. We are actually adopting a bulldog next week and naming it Angus, after the lead guitarist, Angus Young.
What is in store for the future?
Well, I’ve always told all my friends that I would never do a reality show. However, I recently received a call asking me to audition for Bravo’s Project Runway! I thought it was a prank phone call from one of my friends! I’m taking it one step at a time, but I am really excited to meet Tim Gunn! I’m working on making it clear that “this is who I am, this is what I make”.
